St Columba's Golden Jubilee
In 2010 we celebrate 50 years since the current church building was opened.
The story so far ....
A temporary church of St. Columba was dedicated in 1914, and this building is now the church hall. The first part of a permanent church in brick was dedicated in 1929, but this church was destroyed by bombs in 1943. On 17th September 1960 the current church building, incorporates parts of the walls and piers of the bombed building. was consecrated.
Fifty years on we are looking back to celebrate the life of St Columba's Church over the last 50 years, and looking forwards to the continuing work of St Columba's serving the community in our parish. In the words of the Revd Jim Roxburgh, vicar of St Columba's in 1960,
"This Church was built … by people who believe that God ought to have the best of which men are capable. … It's here … to be used … for worship. ... It is to be used too to proclaim ... that Jesus Christ is the Saviour of the world, and has reconciled God and man. It is to be used too to provide a place where men and women can have fellowship with God and with each other."
